Fi & Col Sheppard established Flaxman wines in 2004 with the purchase of Riesling, Shiraz and Semillon vineyards, all planted around 1929 in Eden Valley. They also have parcels of Grenache Mataro, Chardonnay and Cabernet. This is very much a small boutique operation. Colin’s first career as a builder has come in very handy at Flaxman. He has built a cellar door, outdoor kitchen, pergola, and pizza oven. These are all used in their locally famous events where food and their wines create a night to remember for their lucky guests.
Their Riesling is pure Eden Valley - showing wonderful minerality, lime and a lovely freshness. The Semillon is dry grown and handpicked from a 1/2-acre block. This wine is a wonderful example of how elegant and beautifully floral Semillon can be. The shiraz has lovely fruit integrated with soft older oak, hints of classic Eden Valley/Barossa spice and touches of cracked pepper. Finally, the reserve cabernet really packs a punch – intense blue and blackberries on the nose ‘Ripe and rambunctious’ on the palette, these are serious wines.
