Morellino is the coastal expression of Sangiovese, and ‘Tempo’ captures its sun-soaked energy, sea-salt freshness and Mediterranean herbs. Terre di Talamo farms organically on the Maremma coast, producing a wine that balances ripe fruit with lively structure. Aromas of cherry, red plum, rosemary and dried flowers lead into a medium-bodied palate with juicy acidity and silky tannins. The finish is clean and savoury with a touch of spice. Fermentation is in stainless steel to retain freshness, followed by a brief period in neutral oak. Great with grilled sausages, roasted vegetables or pizza. Bright, supple and full of coastal charm.
The Maremma firmly marked its place on the world’s wine map in the 1960s when Sassicaia brought the area’s potential to the world’s notice. Wine had been produced on the hills surrounding the Maremma for centuries but Sassicaia was the first to experiment with Bordelais varietals and the first to plant vines on the (recently drained) coastal plain. Apparently it took a Bordeaux me-too to convince the critics of the region’s potential.
Scansano boasted vineyards centuries before the more fashionable DOCs of Bolgheri and Val di Cornia gained their Parker stripes and Terre di Talamo celebrates this history. It’s in the heart of the Morellino DOCG on a south and east-facing hill with direct maritime exposure. Compared with Chianti or Brunello the days are cooler, nights warmer, and Sangiovese ripens that bit quicker. Vintage variation is less acute and the tannins are softer. The Morellino is a fantastic effort that reflects the vineyards’ coming of age; it’s silky and sun-kissed and wears its blackberry and cherry heart on its sleeve. With a hint of oak and forgiving tannins it's one of the best value wines on the list.
