Rías Baixas DO Puerta Santa Albariño

Rías Baixas, Spain

Albariño thrives in the granite-rich soils and cool breezes of Galicia’s Rías Baixas, particularly in the inland subzone of Condado do Tea where Morgadío cultivates its vines. ‘Puerta Santa’ is a premium selection, named after the Holy Door of Santiago de Compostela, reflecting both local pride and purity. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel, followed by ageing on fine lees for six months. Aromas of white peach, lime blossom, green apple and salty ocean air lift from the glass. The palate is rounded but taut, with citrus-edged acidity and a chalky, mineral structure. It finishes long and mouthwatering, with a touch of fennel and sea spray. An ideal companion to scallops, oysters, or grilled octopus.

The Producer

Vines were first planted on the Morgadío estate in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea back in 1984 as an experimental farm to determine the best methods to cultivate Albariño grapes. As a result, the vineyard has had a significant impact on the development of this star white wine of Spain as well as producing outstanding wines who benefit from an average age of nearly 40 years. Morgadío comes from the Portuguese word ‘morgado’, referring to the plots and possessions handed down to the eldest son as part of an inheritance.

The label for this wine, Puerta Santa, depicts the main door to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, the end point for pilgrims completing the Camino and an important attraction in the Rías Baixas region. The wine is a beautiful example of ripe, full bodied Albariño with typical apple, peach and tropical fruit as well as important acidity. It pairs well with all types of seafood as well as creamy chicken dishes.
