Sardegna, Italy
This rare red hails from Barbagia, Sardinia’s mountainous heartland, where ancient bush vines cling to granite slopes at high elevation. ‘Ghirada Garaunela A’ is made from indigenous varieties, grown without irrigation and vinified naturally in small lots. Fermentation is spontaneous, followed by ageing in neutral barrels that let the terroir shine. Aromas of redcurrant, wild herbs, blood orange and pine needles reveal the landscape in every glass. The palate is lean, savoury and textural, with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity carrying through to a long, earthy finish. Serve with charcuterie, grilled lamb or pecorino. A wild, soulful wine of true identity.
Esole is in the centre of Sardinia, both physically and in the top wines coming out of this exciting island. Federica is only 27, and she has returned to Mamoiada to use her training from Vincent Girardin, Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Domaine Marcoux in CNP. Mamoiadan tradition is at the core of her wines, from a 60 year old family vineyard in the Garaunele District Federica has crafted the ultimate manifestation of Cannonau. One third whole bunch and 10 months in large, used oak this is a serious wine. Orange peel and graphite on the nose, with dark, earthy fruit underneath. On the palate the tannins are austere but ripe, and it has a lovely sapid, fresh finish. A masterclass in winemaking from this amazingly talented youngster.
