Although form a historic winemaking family, Markus rebuilt the estate from scratch in the early 80s. He quietly acquired plots in the best sites and then applied unfeasible rigour to the selection of grapes. His fame was assured when he scooped no fewer than three 100 point scores for a trio of Auslesen reviewed in The Wine Advocate earning Markus the sobriquet “Herr 300 Punkte” (Mr 300 Points).
The estate now comprises 120 Ha of vineyards, 75% of which are in the middle Mosel including Bernkastel, Graach, Welting, Zelting, Ürzig and Kinheim. The remainder are in the Saar valley. All are on steep slopes and some vines are 100 years old. Markus employs a team of 11 full-time viticulturists (not including seasonal labour) who maintain the vineyards and help assess quality at harvest. As a result, the estate can produce up to 80 different wines in a single vintage! Fermentation is spontaneous and often in large old foudre. Botrytis is not encouraged and many wines are made exclusively from healthy grapes up to and including Auslese level.
Markus is not a VDP member by choice and so follows the classic Prädikat nomenclature. White Kap wines are dry, Green Kap are medium and Gold are sweet. We have deliberately selected only a few of his wines, predominantly from Ürziger and Zelting, but have access to the entire range including large formats and back vintages. Just ask!
